Continuing its almost 50-year tradition, the Boynton Woman’s Club recently awarded five scholarships to students.
The five recipients were celebrated during a luncheon at the Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach, marking the first live event the Boynton Woman’s Club has had since February 2020. The scholarships are awarded to students living in Boynton Beach who plan to attend a Florida college in the upcoming fall semester.
This year’s scholarship recipients included Briana Durden (Atlantic Community High School), Laura Felix (Park Vista Community High School), Widnerline Dorneson (Atlantic Community High School), Ava Bonny (Park Vista Community High School) and Brithney Lajeune (South Tech Academy).
“All the applicants were so talented it was very difficult to make decisions,” Christine Hintz, the Boynton Woman’s Club’s new president, said in a statement. “Our winners stood out though because they were all so accomplished and articulate and had such a positive outlook on life.
“Despite losing the opportunity for community service this past year due to COVID,” Hintz said, “they still accumulated an impressive amount of volunteer hours, which they all said was their way of giving back to the community. We wish them well in their future endeavors.”
In addition to the inability to record community service hours last year, Hintz, who served as Scholarship Committee chairwoman, highlighted another challenge presented by the pandemic, noting the limitations caused by telephone and Zoom interviews.
The Boynton Woman’s Club is also offering a scholarship to a woman from Palm Beach County who wishes to resume her education. The scholarship, which was a gift from former Marie Shepard, must be sent on or before Nov. 1, 2021.
