The East Boynton Beach Little League 9- to 11-year-old All-Stars recently enjoyed a successful summer on the diamond as the team won the District 7 Tournament and turned in a strong performance during sectionals.
The East Boynton Little League 11U All-Stars finished with a 3-1 record during the District 7 Tournament, capturing the championship after defeating cross-town rival West Boynton in the title contest.
It also went 1-1 during sectionals and nearly advanced to the state tournament. During the round-robin, three teams each finished with one win before Martin County North advanced based on the tiebreaker of fewest runs allowed.
The East Boynton Little League 11U All-Stars received contributions from Jake Margolis, Marcus Stracke, Hunter Cenkar, Evan Zajc, Landon Slye, Giovanni Monserrate, Jace Hughes, Asher Cohee, Alex Harris, Devin Brooks, Casey Gleichenhaus, Jake Rucci and Tyshaun Cameron. Manager Justin Zajc was joined by assistant coaches Jeff Brooks, Tony Cenkar and Rob Gleichenhaus.
“We had a tremendous run in all-star play, representing the league in a positive manner,” Justin Zajc said. “We were propelled by strong pitching, great defense, selfless teamwork and timely hitting.”
In the District 7 Tournament opener, East Boynton defeated Boca Raton 8-4.
Cenkar went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBI. Hughes homered and drove in two runs while Brooks registered three hits and Monserrate added two hits.
Cenkar started on the mound and pitched 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts while allowing one earned run. Brooks tossed three scoreless innings in relief without allowing a hit and recorded five strikeouts.
East Boynton held off West Boynton 2-1 in the following contest. Cenkar lifted the offense with a go-ahead, two-out RBI single in the fifth and also doubled in the victory.
Stracke, who delivered a single and double at the plate, had a strong performance on the mound. He surrendered one hit in 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Cenkar tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts. West Boynton pitcher Max Maynes fanned seven batters in five innings.
West Boynton bounced back with an 8-0 victory against East Boynton to stave off elimination. West Boynton pitcher Braden Alexander tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings and registered five strikeouts. Stracke and Zajc both had base hits in the loss.
In the championship game, East Boynton defeated West Boynton 5-2. Zajc delivered a single, double and RBI while Monserrate doubled twice and drove in a run. Harris also doubled to help lead the offense. Stracke pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one earned run and four hits with five strikeouts. Cenkar recorded the final two outs and picked up the save.
In the Section 2 Tournament opener, West Melbourne outlasted East Boynton 7-6 in seven innings during an extra-inning battle. Cenkar recorded two hits and two RBI at the plate. Zajc, Monserrate and Cameron each delivered base hits in the loss. Cenkar started on the mound and allowed two earned runs in five innings with three strikeouts.

East Boynton bounced back with a 7-5 victory against Martin County North to wrap up the sectional tournament. Hughes had two hits with a home run and four RBI. Stracke, Cenkar, Zajc and Monserrate each had two hits apiece while Cameron and Gleichenhaus both recorded base hits in the victory. Stracke tossed 3 1/3 innings and allowed two hits with five strikeouts. Brooks pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and struck out two.
“This age group is looking forward to defending its 11U district title next spring and making a deep run in the 12U International tournament,” Zajc said.
In 2018, East Boynton defeated West Boynton in the 8U Palm Beach County Coach Pitch Championship. Stracke, Cenkar, Zajc, Hughes, Rucci, Gleichenhaus and Cameron were all members of the team.
The East Boynton Blaze 11U travel baseball team also received contributions from Stracke, Cenkar, Zajc, Hughes and Brooks this past season. The 11U Blaze finished 5-1-1 at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during July.
The East Boynton Beach Little League has been in the spotlight in previous years during the summer months. In 2003, East Boynton won the U.S. Championship at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In 2013, East Boynton won the 50/70 Intermediate state title.
