Get ready to dial 728 in Palm Beach County, as soon as 561 area code runs out

TALLAHASSEE — New phone numbers in Palm Beach County will receive a 728 area code as the 561 area code runs out of numbers, according to the Florida Public Service Commission.

The commission in December agreed to move forward with a new area code and announced Friday it would be 728. The new area code will serve the same territory as the 561 area code, with current phone customers able to keep the 561 code.

The new area code reflects a growing population and accompanying use of cell phones and other technologies.

“Florida is fortunate to have great weather, a healthy economy, and a growing population — especially in beautiful Palm Beach County,” Public Service Commission Chairman Andrew Fay said in a prepared statement. “As a result of Florida’s growth and the depletion of 561 phone numbers, the commission has approved an additional area code to satisfy the growing consumer demand.”

While the change won’t affect existing numbers, it will require 10-digit dialing for all local calls in Palm Beach County.

The commission is expected Feb. 1 to also take up a proposal to create an additional area code to relieve the 305 and 786 area codes in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys.
