After making the pandemic pivot last year to a car caravan, the Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization will again this year bring a parade of vehicles to John Prince Park in Lake Worth for its main fundraiser at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.

The DownRight ExtraOrdinary Caravan raised money and drew supporters last year by staying socially connected but physically distanced because of COVID-19. The event benefits the Boynton Beach-based organization that provides programs and efforts to promote awareness of the capabilities and talents of people with Down syndrome.

“We are celebrating our DownRight ExtraOrdinary Annual Walk as a Car Caravan to make sure that our children and individuals with Down syndrome stay as safe as possible,” said Executive Director Anne Dichele. “The caravan was a great success last year, and we look forward to celebrating the amazing talents and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome with our community — and staying cool in our cars. We encourage everyone to come and decorate your car and ride in style with our Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization family.”

The caravan will take place at the park’s Center Drive Pavilion, 4759 S. Congress Ave. Cars with decorations celebrating Down syndrome awareness will take a one-mile drive around the lake. Along the route will be cheerleaders and characters. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bags. There also will be a virtual raffle, among other events.

“This year, like most organizations, Gold Coast is working even harder to raise funds for our programs. It took lots of effort on my part, but I am proud that I raised the most money ever for Team Chea in our 18 years of participation,” said walk chairwoman Daniela Chea. “My son Andrew, who has Down syndrome, turned 21 in August, and he celebrated with wings and a beer. I credit Gold Coast for many of his accomplishments, and I want to make sure they continue to help him and all the children and adults with Down syndrome in our community.”
