This week on Let’s Go, South Florida host Arlene Borenstein visits La Biblioteca de Tequila in Dania Beach.
Watch Let’s Go, South Florida: Learn about tequila, and what makes it good or not so good, by watching expert bartender Sean Zekhtser take host Arlene Borenstein on a tasting flight. More at SunSentinel.com/letsgo.
If you have a love/hate relationship with tequila, there is a bar inside the Le Meridien Dania Beach Hotel with a library of more than 300 rare and unique tequilas that won’t necessarily mean lights out.
“Mixto tequilas … are not at this bar. This is 100 percent puro style tequilas,” said Sean Zekhtser, the resident tequila expert at La Biblioteca Tequila Library.
Puro style — or pure — is a process governed by Mexico that measures ingredient to alcohol ratios to determine if the tequila is a blanco, joven u oro, a reposado or añejo. True tequilas use the blue agave plant found in Jalisco, Mexico.
“We really like to showcase our tequilas that nicely express the delicious and unique tones of tequila,” said Zekhtser, who can pour you a drink on the menu, create a flight or freestyle a cocktail you might like.
You’ll find pricier sips in the ultra premium or extra añejo category, with bottles that have aged three to five years and range from $100 to more than a $1,000 per bottle.
You can also sip and taste other selections including the reposados, which means the tequila has “rested” from two months to a year to achieve intricate flavor notes. You can sip on blue nectar for smoky notes and hints of oak and vanilla ($12 a glass).
The bar is the brainchild of acclaimed Mexican-born chef Richard Sandoval, who also owns Toro Latin Kitchen just next to La Biblioteca inside Le Meridien. (He also owns steakhouse Toro Toro at the InterContinental Hotel in downtown Miami).
Several dishes at Toro Latin Kitchen incorporate tequila, even dessert, according to Chef de Cuisine James Rogers. Watch this week’s Let’s Go, South Florida episode to learn more about the menu.
La Biblioteca Tequila Library is inside the Le Meridien Dania Beach Fort Lauderdale Airport hotel on 1825 Griffin Road, Dania Beach. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
