Police shoot and kill armed man in Boynton Beach, department says

BOYNTON BEACH — A man was shot dead by officers responding to a report of a violent domestic disturbance, according to Boynton Beach police.

It happened just after 10 p.m. Tuesday at the gated Via Lugano apartment community, located at 1400 Via Lugano Circle, just west of North Congress Avenue.

Details on the how the shooting unfolded were limited. The police department said in a release that the two officers came upon a man with a weapon, shots were fired and the man died.

Information on how many shots were fired, or whether one or both officers fired their weapons, was not released by the department. The victim’s identity was also not disclosed.

Mitch Van Doff, 56, who moved to the Via Lugano Apartment Homes about a year ago, noticed the commotion Tuesday night, but not the actual shooting.

”It was between nine and 10 o’clock when I looked out the window and there was a lot of cop cars coming in through the gate,” he said. ”A lot of times they send a cop over for noise complaints, but this was different because there were a lot of them, seven or eight that flooded through the gate.”

Van Doff was rattled to learn about shooting, adding that he felt security at the sprawling apartment complex — comprised of hundreds of units — is lax. A white iron fence surrounds the entire perimeter of the property.

The two officers are on administrative leave with pay, per standard procedure, while the shooting is investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Boynton Beach Police Department said in a statement. In addition, its Internal Affairs office will conduct its own review.
