This week on Let’s Go, South Florida host Arlene Borenstein visits Marumi Sushi in Plantation.
Watch Let’s Go, South Florida: A Japanese bar and restaurant in Plantation is far superior than any other in South Florida if you ask Spencer Gilden. He’s been going to Marumi Sushi with the guys on his softball team for nearly a decade and nominated the izakaya eatery to be featured in our Dish Your Neighborhood Gem segment. Is Plantation home to the best Japanese bar and restaurant in Broward County? For Spencer Gilden and his softball team, Marumi Sushi hits it out of the park.
“The best chefs, they’re from Japan. They make food that is homey, that is earthy. And it makes me feel like they are cooking for me if I was in their home,” said Gilden who nominated the location for our Dish Your Neighborhood Gem segment.
Gilden is one of the co-hosts on 560 WQAM’s Zach and the Nose Fantasy Football show, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. But on Tuesday nights during his recreational softball season, Gilden and his teammates do a postgame dinner at Marumi. And have done this religiously for seven years.
It’s a shareable success for the guys who are longtime friends since their days at the University of Florida. Players, ages 40 to 45, range from lawyers to doctors and accountants. The team has played together for 17 years.
“We play Blazers softball … at Sunset Park in Plantation, and instead of going and getting chicken wings or a burger we actually come to Marumi here in Plantation and we eat what I believe is the best Japanese food in Broward County,” said the Blazer’s first baseman. “This is a place where you can get fresh fish, sushi and all different kinds of exotic Japanese food … something you can get if you were actually in Japan.”
Marumi is an izakaya eatery, a Japanese style of eating that offers a large menu of small plates to share with friends while having some drinks.
On this week’s Let’s Go, South Florida we join the team at the table where restaurant staff already know what the guys want to order. First bringing out smaller plates — fried baby bok choy, shrimp and eggplant in miso, crispy needle fish, fried fish salad with onions, and sliced grilled duck — before some larger dishes arrive.
“It’s very hard as you get older. We have children … we have hard schedules that we have to hold to, but every Tuesday night we’re able to go play softball, have a great meal with our buddies and it’s a great tradition we have maintained for so long,” said Gilden.
Marumi is located at 8271 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Plantation. Hours are 5 p.m. to midnight daily. Call 954-318-4455 or visit marumisushi.com.
