Walk, run or bike to support literacy programs in Palm Beach County

The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County will have its 12th annual LOOP for Literacy fundraiser on Feb. 12 at Bryant Park in Lake Worth Beach.

The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, a nonprofit organization based in Boynton Beach, will include a virtual opportunity for walkers, runners and cyclists from Feb. 1 to 12. The Loop Your Way virtual component is available with the place and time selected by the participant.

The proceeds from LOOP for Literacy will support literacy programs throughout Palm Beach County to help children and adults succeed in school and life.

The in-person fundraiser at Bryant Park, Lake Avenue and South Golfview Road, will begin at 7 a.m. and also includes the cycling turn-around at Manatee Lagoon, which is an FPL Eco-Discovery Center. The participants have the option to sign up as individuals or organize as a team with family and friends. The participants will receive a race tech T-shirt and a book-themed finisher medal and all children will receive a book.

“The LOOP event is a fun way to actively support literacy efforts in our community whether you participate in person, on your own or through fundraising,” said Kristin Calder, the CEO of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. “We hope to build on last year’s momentum to be able to make an even greater impact this year.”

The participants have several opportunities for the walk, bike or run. The roadside bike ride is 24 miles, which includes a rest stop at Manatee Lagoon and loops back to Bryant Park. The 5K USATF Certified Run and Walk is open to runners and walkers as well as adults and students 18 and under. The Kids 1-Mile Fun Run is open to children 12 and under while the Kids 100-Yard Dash is open to children 7 and under.

Literacy Coalition board members Boca Raton’s Joe Grant and Palm Beach Gardens’ Andy Loewenstein will serve as the co-chairmen for the event. The Literacy Coalition Committee members also include Regine Bataille, Kathryn Freiburger, Len Gray, Alma Horne, Nicole Rocco and Helena Zacharis.

The LOOP for Literacy’s presenting sponsor is Florida Crystals and the fundraiser is supported by additional sponsors.

The virtual participants can pick up packets for the event at the Blume Literacy Center, 3651 Quantum Blvd., in Boynton Beach.

The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is a recipient of the four-star Charity Navigator rating for 12 consecutive years.
