Susan Sarandon, left, and Geena Davis star in the vacation-gone-wrong thriller “Thelma & Louise,” which will get a 30th anniversary screening at Gables Cinema on Sunday. (Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer Studios)
Looks like we’re about to get a big wet one planted on us this weekend by Tropical Storm Fred. So instead of Fred, let’s Ethel. (“Hey, Siri: Who are Fred and Ethel?”) Here are some things to do this weekend in South Florida, most indoors, that celebrate strong female role models, makers and entertainers, from “Thelma & Louise” and mermaids to drag queens and the Queen of Soul.
Since its premiere 30 years ago this summer, “Thelma & Louise” has been a cultural touchstone, shorthand for the unfathomably deep bond that female friends can achieve. Fittingly, both of its stars, Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, were nominated for Best Actress Oscars. Sarandon called it “revolutionary [for having] two women in a film that weren’t enemies and were having fun together on screen.” (“Thelma & Louise” is also remembered in some quarters for introducing the abs of Brad Pitt.) Coral Gables Art Cinema will celebrate the film and its themes during a 30th anniversary screening 1:30 p.m. Sunday, with an introduction and discussion with Katlyn Aviles, a doctoral student at the University of Miami’s School of Communication. Tickets cost $11.75, seniors, students and military $10. Visit GablesCinema.com.
Free mimosas, favorite music
The Sunday bingo brunch at Boca Raton brewery-eatery Crazy Uncle Mike’s means free mimosas for women ($15 bottomless for men), with this weekend’s soundtrack from DJ Gio Black focused all the way back to the 2000s. Next Sunday, Aug. 22, the music will celebrate Women of Pop and Rock. (All together now, “Barracuda!”) Brunch (with bingo) runs noon-4:30 p.m. Call 561-931-2889 to RSVP or visit CrazyUncleMikes.com.
Death or Glory’s cocktail Tubthumping, a flamingo for two made with fresh pineapple, lime, orgeat, smith & cross, apricot, honey ginger, chinola and burlesque bitters. (Susan Stocker / South Florida Sun Sentinel)
Owned and operated by Ayme Harrison and Annie Blake, Death or Glory in Delray Beach is one of the great bars in South Florida, mostly on the strength of its cocktail menu, though I could go on about its inviting atmosphere and general humanity. The other thing I discovered no thanks to my “friends” was their way with veggie/plant-y snacks, especially the faux-Cheeto-dusted vegan chickpeas. I mean, they’re irresistible. DoG’s quirky Hot Girl Summer cocktail menu (with names like Tubthumping, Weekend at Bernie’s and Stop Making Sense) will soon wind down, but let’s hope hot chickpea summer goes on forever. Effervescent downtown Fort Lauderdale boozery The Wilder is run by a female tag team that includes co-owner Vanessa Cardaci; Ruby Stephan, director of operations at parent company Knallhart Management (Roxanne’s Liquor Bar & Kitchen, Rhythm & Vine, the Easton); and Tamara Jovanovic, Knallhart beverage director. So, yes, a great place to GNO this weekend. Visit IntoTheWilder.com.
Bathroom Line, a drink conceived by Tamara Jovanovic and Ruby Stephan for their Bad Girls Club pop-up dinner series, returning to Roxanne’s Liquor Bar & Kitchen Aug. 23. (Carline Jean / South Florida Sun Sentinel)
Looking ahead a little, Stephan and Jovanovic will reprise their Bad Girls Club pop-up dinner-and-drinks series at Roxanne’s in Flagler Village on Monday, Aug. 23, 5 p.m.-close. A night of noshing and knocking back inventive cocktails, a sneak peek at the all-new menu shows the Hot Rod (corn on the cob coated with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos) and a lobster and mac-and-cheese quesadilla. The irreverent drink list includes Recess (Ketel One in an actual Capri Sun pouch) and Bathroom Line (essentially a highly charged espresso martini pinned with a small baggy of powdered sugar, meant to wink at … well, not the kind of line you wait in). Organized by Fem Collective and UniteUs Group, the festival will include contributions from national and local breweries and bottle shops (locals include, so far, Yeasty Brews, Barrel of Monks, Funky Buddha, Islamorada Beer Co., Tarpon River Brewing and Craft Beer Cellar), along with a lineup of female-led workshops, vendors and bands.
Tickets start at $45, with a portion of the proceeds going to the no-kill shelter Abandoned Pet Rescue. The pet-friendly Kimpton Goodland Hotel is offering “Beercation” room packages that include tickets to the festival. Visit GoodlandHotelFtLauderdale.com.
Horror movies are satisfying for the thrill of watching the protagonist-slash-victim, usually female, employ pluck and resourcefulness to escape the chainsaw-wielding zombie leprechaun or what have you. Most of the time.
The annual Popcorn Frights Film Festival returns this weekend with dozens of films making Florida, U.S. and world premieres at Silverspot Cinema in Coconut Creek. Founded in 2015 by Miami cineastes Igor Shteyrenberg and Marc Ferman, and among MovieMaker Magazine’s list of the World’s 50 Best Genre Festivals, Popcorn Frights runs Aug. 12-19. Highlights range from a retrospective of the classic “Friday the 13th Part IV: Jason Lives” (11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, of course) to a collection of filmed-in-Florida shorts and features, including the world premiere of “The Welder” (9 p.m. Sunday), a feature-length thriller shot entirely in the Florida Everglades by Miami filmmaker David Liz and a team that was mostly Black and Latino.

Bodega opening in Aventura
As we mentioned recently, Bodega Taqueria y Tequila will have a grand opening of its new Aventura space on Friday, the first taqueria-only location for the restaurant group. By that they mean same great tacos and other items (the Tierra y Mar Quesadilla, featuring shaved rib eye and grilled shrimp, is one of the best handhelds around), but less emphasis on booze compared to the downtown Fort Lauderdale shop. Think Mexican beers and frozen margaritas. The 1,500-square-foot space, with the brand’s signature indoor Airstream trailer, is just south of Aventura Mall at 19129 Biscayne Blvd. Visit BodegaTaqueria.com and follow @BodegaTaqueria on Instagram.
